This is a dense columnar shaped tree growing to a height of 15 metres. Oblong, wavy, dark green leaves cover erect branches forming a pyramidal shape as the tree matures. Foliage turns brown in Autumn. Deeply fissured dark grey bark is also a feature. Acorns appear during the Summer months.

The flowers are catkins, produced in spring.
Stately specimen tree for parks and large gardens. Prefers a cooler climate and is tolerant of most soil conditions. The root system can be invasive.
Plant in a well drained and well worked soil. Take care to plant the bud union above the soil level. Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established. Fertilize when planting and again after new growth appears. Prune tree when planting to encourage new growth.
